About me

Iain Rogers, M.A. (Cantab.)

I am a scrivener notary, translator and educator based in West Sussex. I studied languages at the University of Cambridge from 1991 to 1995, specialising in Russian language and history.  I obtained a first-class degree in the summer of 1995 and was awarded the Mallinson prize for academic achievement in language learning. Shortly after graduating I was taken on by Cheeswrights Notaries Public as an apprentice and spent five years learning the craft of being a scrivener notary and laying the groundwork for the firm’s Russian department. On 8th August 2000 I was admitted as a scrivener notary after passing the examinations set by the Worshipful Company of Scriveners in general legal subjects, specialised notarial law and practice, and in two foreign languages – Russian and Spanish. I was made a partner in the firm in 2002, a position which I held until May 2014, when I left the partnership in order to focus on my educational activities.

I have taught notarial practice in one form or another for well over ten years.  I am currently the course convenor for the second (final) year of the Notarial Practice Course run by University College London.  I am also involved in the preparation and running of the Office Practice Course for notaries.  All prospective notaries must complete these courses before being admitted. Prior to the setting up of the Notarial Practice Course at University College London I was the Year 2 Course Director for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Notarial Practice run by the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge.

I lecture on and teach notarial practice to practising notaries nationally and internationally and have acted as examiner or moderator for notarial practice examinations in a number of foreign jurisdictions.

I have been the Education Officer of the Worshipful Company of Scriveners for a number of years.  In that role I organise and moderate the Company’s examinations in Advanced Notarial Law and Practice, foreign legal systems, translating and the practical use of languages. I am also on the Qualifications Board that advises the Master of the Faculties on the qualifications and experience of applicants to the profession. I continue to be associated with Cheeswrights as a consultant and practise as a notary primarily in that capacity.

I also offer consultancy services to notaries generally, particularly in more complex corporate matters and where bilingual or multilingual expertise is needed or beneficial.  I can advise on the correct procedure when dealing with companies incorporated in England and Wales and overseas companies, including the drafting of authorising resolutions, conducting company searches, and the review of company constitutional documents.  I can proof read bilingual and multilingual documents in most European languages to ensure that they correctly reflect your clients’ understanding, giving guidance on relevant legal concepts where appropriate.

Through this website I offer online CPE courses.  I also present seminars and workshops around the country that are accredited by the Master of the Faculties for the purposes of the Notaries (Continuing Professional Education) Regulations 2010.  I can present most topics relevant to notarial practice and am always happy to consider requests to visit notaries at a location convenient to them and to offer the full complement of CPE points for the year in a relaxed but informative manner.

I am registered for VAT.  My VAT registration number is GB 185 8384 58.
